Background

IBM made a strategic decision to outsource a number of its critical environments, with the intention of developing and implementing a continuous cost-saving program.

CHALLENGES

The initial portfolio included offices and data centres located across just five countries. However, this soon expanded and, as of 2019, Apleona delivers essential services at 130 sites in 16 countries including Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and the UK.

As IBM added more and more locations to the portfolio of outsourced premises the challenge came to deliver significant cost reductions across the entire network.

THE APLEONA SOLUTION

In order to achieve high standards of service delivery and availability, Apleona implemented a dedicated and efficient key account structure for sensitive IT and office environments.

To meet the specific demands of the portfolio, responsibility for operations was assigned to three business units along with the respective country units. Together, these are supported by a Centre of Competence covering particular subject matters such as Critical Systems, Quality Management & Sustainability, Health and Safety, Energy, IT and Art Management.

An example of this is Apleona supporting IBM in the evaluation of its data centres’ uptime, reliability and maintainability through a detailed FMECA/RAM analysis. Combined with an energy efficiency analysis, this method allowed IBM to identify energy efficiency potentials and its effects on the availability and reliability of the modified system.

Providing stable operations supported by flexible experts allowed Apleona to join IBM on its journey to become a leading information technology innovator and delivered savings of $100m over the first contract period.
